Nashua groceries hold flat as tariffs hit, and Pappas meets Sununu in November

Chris Pappas and John E. Sununu won their Senate primaries, so the November race is set. A Nashua couple took the Lions Club’s first community hero award. And the monthly grocery check came in almost flat, right as the Canadian tariffs landed.

The aldermen vote Thursday on doubling the road paving fund, and there’s a bucket walk at Greeley Park on Saturday.

Groceries held flat, and then the tariffs hit A monthly check of the same Nashua cart came in 0.23% above August, with avocados and milk down a few cents and a quart of ice cream up 50 cents. The 50% tariff on Canadian goods took effect Tuesday, and paper towels, maple syrup packaging and hockey gear are all on the list. Nashua Ink Link

A Nashua couple wins the Lions Club’s first hero award Beth and Brad Kreick are the first recipients of the Dr. Robert Moheban Humanitarian-Community Hero Award, named for a surgeon who practiced in Nashua for 35 years. She ran the Nashua Education Foundation for 17 years, he chairs Rivier University’s trustees, and the club honors them October 4 at Sky Meadow. Nashua Independent

37 Nashua students earned the state biliteracy seal New Hampshire gave out 533 Seals of Biliteracy this year, the most since the award started in 2021, and 37 went to Nashua students. You get one by finishing the English requirements for graduation and passing a proficiency test in a second language, and this year’s list ran from Spanish and Portuguese to Swahili, Ukrainian and American Sign Language. Pappas and Sununu take the Senate primaries Chris Pappas won the Democratic side with about 63% to Karishma Manzur’s 35%, and John E. Sununu took the Republican side with about 69% to Scott Brown’s 26%. The two meet in November for the seat Jeanne Shaheen is giving up. New Hampshire Bulletin

Merrimack’s ballot machine gets audited this week The Secretary of State’s random draw picked Merrimack, Effingham, Kensington, Rindge, Sandown, Concord Ward 5, Keene Ward 4 and Rochester Ward 5 for the post-election audit. One machine from each place gets checked Wednesday and Thursday at the State Archives in Concord, the public can watch, and the report is due Friday at noon. InDepthNH

The state is drinking less, and bars are following Nonalcoholic sales at the state liquor outlets went from about $42,000 to more than $600,000 in a year, and the shelf space for them more than quadrupled. A Manchester bar called Without is opening with no alcohol on the menu at all, and Portsmouth and Concord have dry spots of their own. NHPR
